Benefits from the project
While supplying low-cost electricity, the project also assures safe, environmentally and socially sustainable development. Compared to fossil fuel-based power plants of the same scale, the Trung Son Hydropower plant will be helping the country reduce its greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). Specifically, the benefits include:
- An annual addition of 1,019GW of low-cost power supply for the country;
- The avoidance of 1 million tons of CO2 emitted annually;
- Greater flood control through a reservoir capacity of 112 million m3;
- Steady supply of irrigation water for agricultural production;
- An improvement in the living standards for about 600 households relocated from the project area (such as better roads, access to electricity and water, schools and community centers, better equipped medical centers);
- Restoration of livelihoods and providing training to improve skills to increase productivity of over 7,000 people affected by the project;
- Over $2 million for environmental protection programs, of which $700,000 is for the protection of adjacent biodiversity areas;
- Employment opportunities for workers during construction period;
- Improvement of roads for local people and adjacent areas, including a 25 km access road from Co Luong to the project site;
